Quiet and discreet: choosing well when you don't live alone

It's the criterion nobody mentions on product pages, and yet it decides the purchase for many people: can it be heard through a partition wall? Can it be put away without having to hide it?

Where the noise comes from

Two sources, unequal.

The motor. A classic unbalanced-weight motor produces a high-pitched buzz. A mechanism that moves a part — thrusting, undulation — produces a deeper and much louder mechanical noise. It's the number one factor: a model with movement will always be more audible than a vibrator, whatever the price. See vibrators with movement.

The casing. With the same motor, a hard plastic casing resonates like a box; a generous thickness of soft silicone absorbs. That's why a small, fully sheathed model is often more discreet than a large rigid model, even a more powerful one.

Good to know: the noise increases a lot in the last two intensity steps. A device that is inaudible at half power can be heard at maximum — and nobody spends their whole time at maximum.

What means nothing

The word “quiet” on packaging isn't regulated by anything. The decibels advertised, when there are any, are measured with nothing in contact and at low intensity: in real use, against the body, the sound changes completely. Trust the construction more than the adjective.

Discretion isn't just about noise

  • The shape. An object that doesn't look like anything in particular can be left on a shelf. Many small stimulators play on this, with pebble or droplet shapes.
  • Storage. A supplied pouch changes everything: it protects from dust, avoids contact between silicones and lets you store it in a drawer without the original packaging.
  • The lock. Look for the “travel lock”, often a long press on two buttons. It's what stops a device from switching itself on in a bag — the real embarrassing situation.
  • Charging. A standard USB port can be charged from any socket with no identifiable cable. Proprietary magnetic bases look nicer but can't be mistaken for anything else.

What it costs in terms of sensations

It has to be said clearly: with the same technology, the quietest model is rarely the most powerful. A big, well-insulated motor does exist, but it's expensive and stays bulky. Below that, it's a trade-off — and for many living situations, the trade-off is worth it.

If you're a beginner and discretion is your main constraint, go for a small external format in soft silicone: it's the best balance between effectiveness and silence. That's exactly the family reviewed in vibrating eggs and mini vibrators. See also lay-on stimulators and the first sex toy guide.

Our orders are shipped in a neutral parcel, with no mention of the contents or of the shop. The small formats are in Eggs & Mini Vibrators and Clitoral Stimulators.
