Lay-on stimulator: the rest-on format, who it's for and why

Stimulateur lay-on en silicone blanc posé sur un socle de verre, fond de satin rose

“Lay-on” means exactly what it says: you rest it on. No penetration, no suction, no tip to aim — a wide surface that you apply against the clitoris and the area around it, and that vibrates.

It's the oldest and simplest format. It's also the one that is explained the least well, because it has no spectacular selling point to put on the box.

The difference from pulsed air

A pulsed-air stimulator has a small opening that has to be placed around the clitoris: if it's badly positioned, the sensation disappears completely. A lay-on has nothing to aim. You rest it roughly in the right place and it works.

This tolerance changes a lot when you're starting out, or simply when you don't feel like searching. On the other hand, the sensation is more diffuse: it covers an area instead of focusing on one point. Some people much prefer that, others find it too vague. Both answers are normal. The full comparison is in pulsed air or vibration.

Who it suits

  • If you're a beginner. Nothing to insert, nothing to aim, nothing to figure out. It's the format that requires the least learning.
  • If pulsed air disappointed you. Many people conclude “it doesn't work on me” when the problem was the placement. The lay-on removes the question.
  • If you find vibrators too intense. Because it spreads over a surface, a lay-on is generally less harsh than a vibrating tip, even at the same power.
  • For two. Its flat shape slips between two bodies during sex, which a model with a handle doesn't allow.

What to look at

The contact surface. It's the only figure that counts, and nobody states it. Look at the photos: a wide head diffuses, a narrow head concentrates. Choose according to what you already know you like.

Flexibility. A rigid lay-on transmits all of the vibration but adapts poorly to the anatomy. A model in soft silicone follows the shape and stays in place on its own — preferable in most cases.

Water resistance. Most lay-ons are waterproof, which is useful for cleaning much more than for the shower.

Good to know: always start at the lowest intensity, and don't stay at maximum for long. A clitoris that goes numb takes a while to come back, and that's not a sign of power but of the wrong setting.

A lubricant, even without penetration

It's the habit that is missing most often. A drop of water-based lubricant between the skin and the silicone removes dry friction, and makes a medium intensity much more comfortable. See water or silicone.
