Accessories are often chosen for their shape or color. The material, however, takes a back seat. This is a shame: it determines the sensations, ease of maintenance, lifespan, and above all, what you put in contact with your mucous membranes.
The key concept: porous or non-porous
A non-porous material has a closed surface: nothing penetrates, and a simple wash is enough to make it perfectly clean. A porous material has invisible micro-cavities that retain moisture and bacteria, which no amount of cleaning can completely remove.
This is the only truly non-negotiable criterion. Everything else is a matter of taste.
Silicone: the safe bet
Non-porous, flexible, soft, hypoallergenic, it withstands heat and cleans in seconds. It's the reference material for serious brands, and the one we unhesitatingly recommend for a first purchase.
Point of caution: no silicone-based lubricant on it, as this may degrade the surface. A water-based lubricant, and all is well.

Borosilicate glass: the unloved material that's worth trying
The word "glass" causes concern. Wrongly so: borosilicate is the same glass used for oven-safe dishes, designed to withstand thermal shocks. It is completely non-porous, offers an incomparable glide, and is compatible with absolutely all lubricants.
Its real asset lies elsewhere: it retains temperature. A few minutes in a glass of warm or cool water, and you add a sensory dimension that nothing else can reproduce.
For whom: those who want precise and firm sensations, or to explore thermal play.
Metal: weight as a sensation
Stainless steel operates on two registers: perfect glide and a noticeable mass. This density provides continuous pressure that is highly appreciated in internal areas. Like glass, it lends itself to hot/cold play and cleans effortlessly.
For whom: lovers of strong sensations. Avoid if you are looking for flexibility.
ABS: the support for technology
This rigid, non-porous plastic is used for vibrator casings and most pulsed air stimulators. It transmits vibrations without absorbing them, which flexible silicone does less well. It is therefore often found in combination: ABS casing, silicone contact surface.
For whom: all electronic accessories. Pay attention to water-resistance during cleaning.
TPE, TPR, and "jelly": know them to avoid unpleasant surprises
These flexible elastomers are inexpensive and very realistic to the touch. But they are porous, sensitive to heat, and degrade over time: the surface becomes sticky, the smell changes.
This is not a reason to ban them, but to use them with full knowledge of the facts: with a condom, for individual use, and regular replacement. Many realistic masturbators use these materials, because no other reproduces that touch.
